According to maritime risk firm Marisks, the scammers have contacted shipowners via fake messages, requesting transit fees in Bitcoin (BTC) or Tether (USDT). These claims emerged amid ongoing tensions in the Middle East that have left the vital waterway largely inaccessible.

The Strait of Hormuz is a critical chokepoint for global energy trade, facilitating the transport of approximately 20% of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG).
