Sei Giga’s Autobahn: Blockchain Revolutionized with Multi-Proposal Consensus

Sei Giga introduces Autobahn, a consensus mechanism that boosts blockchain throughput 50x by using a multi-proposal model. This increases scalability while maintaining Byzantine fault tolerance.

Sei Giga has made significant strides in the blockchain industry with its Autobahn consensus system, which uses a multiproposer architecture that increases network throughput. This is a radical departure from traditional single-proposer blockchain systems, such as Tendermint. These systems, while offering deterministic assurances and eliminating forks have limitations in terms of throughput.

Traditional models: Challenges and solutions

Tendermint, a consensus model widely used in Proof-of-Stake (PoS), follows a sequential procedure that involves proposing, voting, precommitting and committing blocks. The single-proposer model creates bottlenecks. This is especially true if the proposer goes offline or is malicious. A timeout must be taken and the consensus process restarted. The tight coupling between data availability and the consensus process also limits throughput as each step has to be completed before moving on.

Autobahn's Multiple-Proposer Benefit

Autobahn, used by SeiGiga, circumvents this issue by allowing several validators to submit blocks at the same time. This multi-proposer architectural approach delivers a 50x increase in throughput compared to Tendermint, while maintaining Byzantine fault tolerance. Decoupling data availability from consensus, which enables continuous and parallel data distribution, is a major innovation.

This model allows validators to maintain their own 'lanes,' allowing for asynchronous execution of transactions and order without having to wait for global consensus. Proof of Availability allows for consensus to be reached based on light proofs, rather than large data transfers. This optimizes network efficiency.

Enhancing Network Efficiency

The Autobahn protocol captures snapshots of the network periodically, combining proposals from all lanes to create a "cut" proposal. Validators can vote on the cuts to enable a consensus decision for multiple proposals. This method speeds up the consensus process by reducing communication costs and reducing round trips to 1.5, as opposed to Tendermint’s 3.

Decoupling Benefits

Decoupling data availability from consensus has several benefits: massively parallel processing of data, reduced communication overhead and increased censorship resistance. Multiple validators submitting transactions simultaneously prevent censorship, and ensure that transactions have multiple routes to inclusion. This structure supports asynchronous execution and data pipelines. Complex transactions can be processed without affecting throughput.

Sei Giga’s Autobahn is a major advancement in blockchain consensus. It offers a scalable, reversible solution to traditional PoS limitations. Sei Giga's multi-proposer architectural shift enhances throughput and reduces latency while maintaining robust security protocols.
