Ethereum announced that applications are now open for its Next Billion Fellowship program's fifth cohort. According to the Ethereum blog, this initiative is looking for new applicants. It aims to support and highlight projects that leverage Ethereum's Blockchain technology to tackle societal issues.
Understanding the Next Billion Fellowship
The Next Billion Fellowship Program aims to highlight compelling stories that show Ethereum's impact in communities around the world. Past fellows have worked on a variety of projects including implementing digital wallets and badges for scouts around the world, improving crop insurance for Kenyan Farmers, and using decentralized systems during humanitarian crises in Syria.
The six-month program offers participants mentorship, project funding, access to Ethereum’s extensive network and exposure opportunities. The fellowship focuses on real-world application to help transform Ethereum into a tool that can be used for social benefit.
Application Details
Candidates are encouraged to submit their applications by 12 January 2025. After this date, submissions will be considered in the next cohort. The application process is intended to identify innovative projects which can harness Ethereum’s capabilities to bring about meaningful change.

Program Timeline
- From November 20,24 to January 12, 2025, application period for Cohort 5.
- January 2020 - April 2025 Review of Cohort 5 applications and ongoing evaluations of Cohort 6.
- Cohort 5 application review for April 2025 to October 2025.
- September 20,25 to March 2026: Fellowship Program for Cohort 6.
Additional Opportunities
Ethereum also offers two "Office Hours", sessions for interested parties, during the application period. These sessions will take place on December 11, 2020, at 07:00 and January 8, 2020, at 15:30 UTC. Participants can register online.
The Next Billion Fellowship is Ethereum's way of fostering innovation, and addressing real world issues using blockchain technology.
